The 4 Month Sleep Regression

The first of many sleep regressions that occurs. This happens at around 4 months (anywhere from 3-5 months). It can feel like it came out of nowhere. It may seem like you have just got your baby to sleep longer stretches and then suddenly they are awake again every hour to two hours. If your baby is in this age bracket and you are dealing with night waking’s and short naps, you may be experiencing this regression.

What is happening is a huge developmental shift. Your baby’s sleep is becoming like an adults. It is taking them longer to fall asleep and some sleep is becoming more active. They are now waking up and falling back asleep (hopefully!) many times during the night.

While moving between sleep cycles they will look for whatever conditions they had when falling asleep to maintain their sleep. So if that was being bounced, rocked or fed that is potentially what they will look for again.

Now is a great time to start some gentle sleep training and set your baby up for sleep success!
